Johannesburg is the main hub of activity and heart of Gauteng and offers many a unique experience.
We’ve always been firm believers in the fact that you do not have to spend a fortune to entertain yourself and your family and friends if you know where to go. So, come on, hop inside a Magic Transfers shuttle and let us show you some of the best things you can do in Johannesburg without spending too much.
Pack a picnic basket and escape the hustle and bustle of the city on a Sunday and go for an early morning drive up to the top of Northcliff Hill which offers a breath-taking view of the city. Or venture to the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens for a day in the beautiful gardens, visit the waterfall or take a hike up the hiking trail for spectacular views.
Experience the delights of an evening market on the first Thursday of every month when the popular Sunday Market at Arts on Main in Maboneng opens its night market. Spend an evening amongst an enthusiastic crowd while sampling delicious cuisine and sipping on a glass of wine to keep you warm. Want to go for the budget option? Just enjoy the people and sights, go stall-browsing if you please. The Neighbourgoods market and Rosebank and Norwood flea markets are also worth a visiting and a great place to buy gifts!
Speaking of shopping, or rather browsing, Parkhurst’s Fourth Avenue has shops in abundance. You’ll find everything from antique shops and artsy stores to boutique clothing stores. You can also visit some of Johannesburgs state of the art malls; The Mall of Africa, Fourways Mall, Cresta Shopping Centre and Clearwater Mall to name a few. A morning of window shopping will be entertainment enough but be warned though, you may not be able to keep your wallet inside your handbag or pocket for too long.
Johannesburg is home to a spectacular array of art galleries, many in Rosebank being within walking distance of one another. Take a friend or partner on an afternoon of cultured experience head on over to the Goodman Gallery, Circa and Everard Read.
If you’re a newcomer and looking to uncover the remarkable history of South and Southern Africa then we urge you to pay a visit to Museum Africa in Newtown. Or, spend the morning at The Apartheid Museum followed by a fun-filled afternoon at Gold Reef City theme park in Johannesburg south – fees will apply here, but are well worth it!
While we’re on the subject of history, you’ll want to tour to the Walter Sisulu Square in Soweto, another location equally as rich in history and culture. Browse about the shops, the open-air museum and the Freedom Charter Monument. Do yourself a favour and spend a little on an authentic shisanyama lunch (meat grilled to perfection over an open fire or otherwise known as a braai).
There you have it. No need to spend a fortune or, in some cases, a cent to have a spectacular stay in Johannesburg. They don’t call it the City of Gold for nothing.
